: Turkey objected to Greeces decision to block a European Union-NATO defense project. The EU-NATO deal would have established a 60,000 troop European rapid reaction force. In fact, Turkeys prime minister Bulent Evcevit was quoted as saying of the Greek position that: "It creates the image that Greece is considering designs against us." Originally, Turkey objected to the new corps until the EU promised that the force would not be used in any Greco-Turk disputes.
