The US is again pressuring Israel to stop building new housing for Jewish settlers in Palestinian areas. However, given the way democracy works in Israel, the current government cannot maintain a majority in parliament without the support of pro-settler factions.
An opinion survey showed that 66 percent of Israelis backed attacks on individual terrorist leaders. Some 30 percent opposed the policy.
